Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Fork or Spoon for mashing fruit
  • Baking Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried figs chopped
  • 1 cup dates pitted and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp honey optional for sweetness
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup ground almonds or almond flour
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour or barley flour for authenticity
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • crushed nuts, sesame seeds, or a drizzle of honey optional

Instructions

1. Prepare the Figs and Dates

  • In a saucepan, combine the chopped figs, dates, and water. Heat on low-medium, stirring occasionally, until the fruits soften and absorb the water (about 5-7 minutes). Mash the mixture into a paste with a fork or spoon. Set aside to cool.

2. Mix the Ingredients

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the fig and date paste with olive oil, honey, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Add the beaten eggs, ground almonds, and flour, stirring until a thick batter forms.

3. Prepare for Baking

  • Lightly grease a small baking dish (or line it with parchment paper).
  • Pour the batter into the dish, spreading it evenly.

4. Bake the Cake

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cake is firm and golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly.

5. Garnish and Serve

  • Optionally garnish with crushed nuts, sesame seeds, or a drizzle of honey.
  • Slice into squares or small pieces and serve warm or at room temperature.
