- 1 cup dried figs chopped
- 1 cup dates pitted and chopped
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp honey optional for sweetness
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup ground almonds or almond flour
- 1/4 cup whole wheat flour or barley flour for authenticity
- 2 eggs beaten
- crushed nuts, sesame seeds, or a drizzle of honey optional
1. Prepare the Figs and Dates
In a saucepan, combine the chopped figs, dates, and water. Heat on low-medium, stirring occasionally, until the fruits soften and absorb the water (about 5-7 minutes). Mash the mixture into a paste with a fork or spoon. Set aside to cool.
2. Mix the Ingredients
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a mixing bowl, combine the fig and date paste with olive oil, honey, cinnamon, and salt.
Add the beaten eggs, ground almonds, and flour, stirring until a thick batter forms.
3. Prepare for Baking
Lightly grease a small baking dish (or line it with parchment paper).
Pour the batter into the dish, spreading it evenly.
4. Bake the Cake
Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cake is firm and golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly.
5. Garnish and Serve
Optionally garnish with crushed nuts, sesame seeds, or a drizzle of honey.
Slice into squares or small pieces and serve warm or at room temperature.
