Why didn’t God answer my prayer?
August 19, 2025One of the most difficult questions we face in life is: Why do bad things happen to good people? When tragedy strikes, when pain feels unbearable, or when we see the innocent suffering, it can shake our faith and leave us wondering about God’s goodness. The Bible doesn’t shy away from this question. Instead, it offers comfort, perspective, and hope that can help us endure even when life doesn’t make sense.
A Broken World
The first thing Scripture reminds us is that we live in a fallen world. Romans 8:22 says, “We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” Ever since sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, suffering, pain, and death have been part of human experience. Bad things happen not always because of personal sin, but because the world itself is broken.
Jesus Himself Suffered
One of the most powerful truths is that Jesus—God’s own Son—was not spared from suffering. Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as “a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.” He was betrayed, mocked, beaten, and crucified. When we ask why suffering happens, we can look to Jesus and see that even the most righteous person to ever live endured terrible pain. This reminds us that suffering is not a sign of God abandoning us but often a part of walking with Him.
God Can Use Suffering for Good
Romans 8:28 gives us this promise: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” While suffering itself is painful, God can bring beauty from ashes. Through trials, our faith is refined, our character strengthened, and our dependence on God deepened. What feels like a setback can become the very place God brings transformation and testimony.
We’re Not Alone in Our Pain
The Bible also assures us that God draws near to us in suffering. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Even when we can’t understand why bad things happen, we can trust that God is not distant. He is present in our pain, offering comfort, strength, and peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Our Hope Is Eternal
Finally, Scripture points us beyond this life. Revelation 21:4 gives us a glimpse of eternity: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” While suffering is part of our earthly experience, it is not the end of the story. For those in Christ, a day is coming when pain will be no more and God’s perfect justice and love will reign forever.
Conclusion: Trusting God in the Mystery
The question “Why do bad things happen to good people?” may never have a simple answer, but the Bible gives us truths we can hold onto:
- The world is broken by sin.
- Even Jesus suffered.
- God can bring good out of pain.
- He is close to the brokenhearted.
- Our hope is in eternity with Him.
When life feels unfair and overwhelming, we can rest in God’s promises. He has not abandoned us. He is with us, working for our good, and one day, He will make all things new.
