What are baptism and communion?
September 2, 2025More Than a Building
When most people hear the word “church,” they picture a building—pews, stained glass windows, or maybe a stage and sound system. But the Bible teaches that the church is not a place. The church is the people of God.
The Greek word for church, ekklesia, literally means “a gathering” or “an assembly.” The church is the family of believers—those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ—coming together to worship, learn, encourage each other, and live out God’s mission in the world.
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:27
The Church as the Body of Christ
The Bible often describes the church as a body, with Jesus as the head and believers as its members. Each person plays a unique role, just like parts of a body. Some encourage, some teach, some serve, some give—but together, the church functions as one united family.
This means it is about belonging, not just attending. It’s about finding your place in God’s family and living out your faith in community.
The Purpose
- Worship God Together – The church gathers to praise, pray, and glorify the Lord.
- Grow in Faith – Through teaching and discipleship, believers grow deeper in God’s Word.
- Care for One Another – It is a place of encouragement, support, and practical help.
- Serve the World – Jesus gave the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20), calling the church to share the gospel and care for others.
Common Misunderstandings
- “I don’t need church, I can follow God on my own.”
While personal faith is important, God designed us for community. We grow stronger together, not alone. - “Church is only on Sundays.”
The early church in Acts met often, shared meals, and cared for each other daily. Church life is about relationships, not just a weekly service. - “Church is perfect.”
It is made up of people—imperfect and still growing. But even in weakness, God uses us to show His love to the world.
Final Encouragement
This is not just a building or an event—it’s God’s people, His family, His chosen community. Whether you’re gathering in a large congregation, a small group, or even around a dinner table, you are the church when you belong to Christ.
❤️ Takeaway: The church is a living body of believers, united by faith in Jesus, created to worship God, grow together, and serve the world.
