Gods Word on Abuse and Recovery: Bible Study Guide
November 20, 2025Introduction
Past trauma leaves deep marks on the heart. It shapes how you think, how you feel, how you trust, and even how you see yourself. Trauma can create fear, shame, anxiety, or emotional numbness — long after the event has passed.
But here is the truth: God is a healer.
He sees what others didn’t see.
He knows what broke your heart.
And He gently restores what trauma tried to destroy.
This Bible study guide will walk you through Scriptures that reveal God’s compassion, protection, and restoring power. As you meditate on these verses, God will begin rebuilding your identity, renewing your peace, and healing the places in your heart that still hurt.
What Does the Bible Say About Healing from Trauma?
The Bible is full of people who experienced deep trauma — betrayal, violence, abandonment, rejection, loss — yet God restored them, strengthened them, and transformed their lives.
Here are key biblical truths that speak directly into healing past trauma:
1. God Heals the Brokenhearted
Key Verse:
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
Reflect:
- What wounds still feel unhealed?
- How has God already begun mending your heart?
2. God Walks with You Through the Fire
Key Verse:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.” (Isaiah 43:2)
Reflect:
- What “fire” from your past still affects you?
- How does knowing God walks with you change your healing process?
3. God Restores What Was Lost
Key Verse:
“I will restore to you the years the locusts have eaten.” (Joel 2:25)
Reflect:
- What did trauma steal from you — trust, confidence, peace?
- Where do you need God to restore your life?
4. God Is Close to the Crushed in Spirit
Key Verse:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
Reflect:
- Which memories still feel heavy?
- What does it mean to let God stay close in moments of pain?
5. God Renews Your Mind
Key Verse:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
Reflect:
- What thought patterns came from trauma?
- What truth from God do you want to replace them with?
6. God Makes You New
Key Verse:
“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Reflect:
- What part of your identity needs renewal?
- What does it mean to be made new after trauma?
7. God Gives You Peace That Protects Your Heart
Key Verse:
“The peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
Reflect:
- What triggers your anxiety or fear?
- How can God’s peace guard those vulnerable areas?
