How to Read the Bible in Times of Suffering
September 10, 2025Every Christian has opened the Bible and thought, “I have no idea what that means.” You’re not alone—some passages are complex, symbolic, or rooted in ancient culture that feels far from our own. Struggling to understand doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you’re being honest as a learner of God’s Word. The key is knowing what to do in those moments.
Remember: You’re Not Alone
Even biblical scholars admit they don’t fully understand every passage. God didn’t design the Bible to confuse us but to invite us into a lifelong journey of learning.
“The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” — Psalm 119:130 (NIV)
Practical Steps When You Don’t Understand
- Pray First
Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom. He is your greatest teacher (John 14:26). - Read the Surrounding Context
Often the verses before and after provide clarity. Look for the main theme of the chapter. - Compare Translations
Reading the same verse in different translations (NIV, ESV, NLT) can help you see the meaning more clearly. - Use Study Tools
A study Bible, commentary, or Bible dictionary can explain history, language, and culture. - Ask for Guidance
Talk with a pastor, mentor, or Bible study group. God often teaches us through community. - Hold Tension with Humility
Some passages remain mysterious. That’s okay. Trust that God will reveal what you need in His time.
Example: Revelation Imagery
Reading Revelation can feel overwhelming with its visions and symbols. Instead of trying to decode every image, focus on the clear message: God is in control, Christ has won the victory, and believers have hope.
Practical Tip
Confusion can feel frustrating, but it’s actually an opportunity to grow. Struggling with Scripture can deepen your faith, teaching you patience, humility, and dependence on God’s Spirit.
Closing Encouragement
Don’t let confusion keep you from God’s Word. Keep showing up, keep asking questions, and keep trusting that God will give you light step by step. His Word is for you—even when you don’t understand everything right away.
