How Often Should I Read the Bible?

How to Read the Bible in Context
September 8, 2025Sometimes we read the Bible and close the page wondering, “What did I just read?” The SOAP method is a simple but powerful tool that helps you slow down, understand God’s Word, and apply it to your life. It’s not about checking off chapters—it’s about letting Scripture shape your heart and decisions.
What Does SOAP Stand For?
The SOAP method is an easy framework you can use with any passage of Scripture:
- S — Scripture
Write down a verse or passage that stands out to you. Copying it word-for-word helps you focus and remember it. - O — Observation
Ask: What is happening here? Who is speaking? What is the main message? Notice repeated words, commands, or promises. - A — Application
Consider: What does this mean for my life today? Ask how the verse shapes your thoughts, choices, or relationships. - P — Prayer
Turn what you’ve learned into a prayer. Thank God for His Word, ask for strength to live it out, or bring your struggles to Him.
Example of the SOAP Method
Let’s take Philippians 4:6–7:
- Scripture: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
- Observation: Paul is reminding believers to replace worry with prayer. God promises peace when we do this.
- Application: I often let worry take over my mind. Today, I will bring my concerns about work to God in prayer instead of overthinking.
- Prayer: Lord, thank You for reminding me that I don’t need to carry anxiety alone. Please fill me with Your peace today.
Why the SOAP Method Works
This method keeps Bible study simple and practical. Instead of just reading, you interact with the passage, reflect deeply, and take away something meaningful for your day.
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” — James 1:22 (NIV)
Practical Tip
The SOAP method is especially helpful if you feel overwhelmed or unsure where to begin. It gives structure without pressure. Even a short passage can become a powerful conversation with God when you walk through these four steps.
Closing Encouragement
God’s Word is meant to be lived, not just read. The SOAP method helps you move from head knowledge to heart transformation. Next time you open your Bible, try this simple approach—you’ll be amazed at how God speaks through it.
