Where to Start in the Bible
September 7, 2025Have you ever felt like it was too late to change your life? The story of the thief on the cross shows us that it’s never too late for God’s mercy. Even in his final moments, this man found forgiveness and the promise of eternity with Jesus.
📖 Story Summary
In Luke 23, as Jesus hung on the cross, two criminals were crucified beside Him. One mocked Jesus, saying: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
But the other rebuked him: “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” (Luke 23:40–41, NIV).
Then he turned to Jesus and said: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Jesus answered with words of assurance: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43, NIV).
Grace in the Final Hour
The thief had nothing to offer—no good works, no time to make things right. Yet Jesus gave him eternal life through simple faith. Salvation is not about what we do, but about trusting in what Christ has done.
The Power of Repentance
In humility, the thief acknowledged his sin and recognized Jesus’ innocence. His prayer was short but sincere, and Jesus responded with mercy.
Jesus, Our Assurance of Paradise
Jesus’ promise—“today you will be with me in paradise”—reminds us that eternal life is secure the moment we put our faith in Him. His death opens the way for all who believe.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
The story of the thief on the cross reminds us that God’s grace reaches us at any moment—even at the end of life. No one is too far gone, and no situation is beyond His saving power. If you put your trust in Jesus, He offers you the same promise: life with Him forever.
