The Golden Calf and God’s Judgment Bible Study
April 7, 2025One of the most foundational events in the Old Testament is when God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai. This moment marked a covenant between God and His chosen people, Israel, and established the moral and spiritual principles that still guide us today.
📜 The Journey to Mount Sinai
After God delivered the Israelites from Egypt and parted the Red Sea (Exodus 14), they journeyed through the wilderness. Three months later, they arrived at Mount Sinai, where God had a special plan for His people.
“In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt… they entered the Desert of Sinai.” – Exodus 19:1 (NIV)
God told Moses that if Israel obeyed His voice and kept His covenant, they would be His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exodus 19:5–6).
🌩️ God’s Presence on the Mountain
God instructed the people to consecrate themselves for three days. On the third day, Mount Sinai trembled with thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, and the sound of a trumpet, signaling God’s holy presence.
“Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire.” – Exodus 19:18
Only Moses was permitted to go up the mountain. There, God spoke to him and gave the Ten Commandments directly, written on two stone tablets by the finger of God.
🔟 The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–17)
Here are the Ten Commandments as delivered by God:
- You shall have no other gods before Me.
- You shall not make for yourself an idol or worship any image.
- You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
- Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
- Honor your father and your mother.
- You shall not murder.
- You shall not commit adultery.
- You shall not steal.
- You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
- You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.
“And God spoke all these words…” – Exodus 20:1
These commandments revealed God’s holiness and expectations for how His people should relate to Him and to one another.
🙌 Why the Ten Commandments Matter
The Ten Commandments are more than ancient rules—they reflect God’s perfect character and guide us toward a life of righteousness and love. They teach us:
- To love and honor God above all else (Commandments 1–4)
- To treat others with respect and integrity (Commandments 5–10)
Even in the New Testament, Jesus affirmed the heart of these commandments:
“Love the Lord your God… and love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:37–39

Exodus 19–20
💡 Faith Application
The Ten Commandments remind us of God’s holy standard. While we cannot perfectly keep the law on our own, they point us to our need for grace through Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law and empowers us to walk in obedience by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:3–4).
The story of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai teaches us that God desires a holy relationship with His people. His law is not a burden but a blessing—a divine guide for living a life that honors Him and loves others.
