The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32)
September 6, 2025Have you ever seen someone in need and wondered if you should stop to help? Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan to show us what true love looks like—love that crosses boundaries, costs something, and reflects God’s heart for people.
📖 Story Summary
In Luke 10, an expert in the law asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus asked him what the law said, and the man replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”
Wanting to justify himself, the man asked: “And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus answered with a story: A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho was attacked by robbers, beaten, and left half-dead. A priest and a Levite both passed by without helping. But a Samaritan—someone despised by the Jews—stopped, bandaged the man’s wounds, took him to an inn, and paid for his care.
Jesus then asked: “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
Love in Action
The Samaritan’s compassion was not just a feeling—it moved him to act. True love takes risks, makes sacrifices, and cares for others in practical ways.
Breaking Down Barriers
Jews and Samaritans despised one another, yet Jesus chose a Samaritan as the hero of the story. God’s love breaks down walls of prejudice and calls us to see everyone as our neighbor.
Jesus, the Ultimate Good Samaritan
This parable points us to Jesus Himself. Like the Samaritan, He came to us when we were broken and helpless. He healed us, paid the cost of our salvation, and gave us new life.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
The Good Samaritan teaches us that love is more than words—it is mercy in action. Look around your life today. Who needs compassion, kindness, or help? When you show love to others, you reflect the heart of God.
