The Resurrection (Matthew 28, John 20)
September 6, 2025Have you ever questioned how much God loves you? The crucifixion of Jesus is the ultimate answer. On the cross, Jesus bore the weight of our sin and showed a love so deep it changed history forever. This is not just a story of suffering—it is the story of redemption.
📖 Story Summary
In Matthew 27 and John 19, we read the account of Jesus’ trial and death. Though innocent, Jesus was condemned by the religious leaders and handed over to Pontius Pilate. The crowd called for His crucifixion, and Pilate gave in to their demands.
Jesus was mocked, beaten, and forced to carry His cross to Golgotha. Soldiers nailed Him to the cross between two criminals. Above His head they placed the sign: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
As He hung on the cross, people mocked Him, but Jesus prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Darkness fell over the land, and after hours of agony, Jesus cried out: “It is finished.” Then He gave up His spirit.
At that moment, the temple curtain tore in two, the earth shook, and many realized this was no ordinary man. A Roman centurion declared: “Surely he was the Son of God!” Jesus’ body was laid in a tomb, sealed with a stone.
Jesus Bore Our Sin
On the cross, Jesus took the punishment for our sins. He carried our guilt and shame so that we could be forgiven.
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” — 1 Peter 2:24 (NIV)
The Power of Love and Forgiveness
Even in His suffering, Jesus offered forgiveness. His words remind us that no sin is too great for His mercy.
The Cross and God’s Plan
The crucifixion was not an accident—it was God’s plan of salvation. Jesus’ death fulfilled prophecy and opened the way for us to be reconciled with God.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
The crucifixion is the center of our faith. It reveals the depth of God’s love and the cost of our salvation. Whenever you doubt your worth or God’s care, look to the cross—there you see love that never fails and forgiveness that sets you free.
