Deborah the Judge Bible Story
April 10, 2025When God is on your side, even the sun can pause for your victory. The story of “The Sun Stands Still” is a miraculous moment in Scripture found in Joshua 10, where God answered a bold and faithful prayer by literally stopping the sun and moon in the sky.
🌄 The Context: A Coalition Against Gibeon
After Joshua led Israel into the Promised Land, the nearby city of Gibeon made a peace treaty with Israel (Joshua 9:15). This angered the Amorite kings, who formed a coalition of five kings to attack Gibeon.
In response, the Gibeonites pleaded with Joshua for help, and Joshua honored the covenant by marching his army overnight to aid them (Joshua 10:6–9).
⚔️ God’s Assurance of Victory
Before the battle began, God reassured Joshua with these words:
“Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you.”
—Joshua 10:8 (ESV)
God then intervened in the battle by throwing the enemy into confusion and even hurling large hailstones from the sky, which killed more men than the Israelites did with the sword (Joshua 10:10–11).
☀️ Joshua’s Bold Prayer
As the battle continued and daylight began to fade, Joshua prayed one of the boldest prayers in the Bible:
“Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
—Joshua 10:12 (ESV)
God responded to Joshua’s faith:
“And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.”
—Joshua 10:13 (ESV)
This was not poetic language—Scripture emphasizes the uniqueness of this event:
“There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.”
—Joshua 10:14 (ESV)
