Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22–33)
September 6, 2025Have you ever faced a crossroads in life where you had to choose between comfort and faithfulness? The story of Ruth shows us the beauty of loyalty, love, and trust in God’s plan. Her decision to stay with Naomi changed her life—and became part of God’s greater story of redemption.
📖 Story Summary
In the days of the judges, a famine struck Israel, and a man named Elimelek moved with his wife Naomi and their two sons to Moab. Sadly, Elimelek and his sons died, leaving Naomi and her two Moabite daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, as widows.
Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem and urged both women to stay in Moab. Orpah went back, but Ruth refused to leave her side. She declared: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16, NIV).
In Bethlehem, Ruth worked in the fields to provide for Naomi. She caught the attention of Boaz, a kind and godly man. Boaz showed generosity and protection to Ruth. Later, through Naomi’s guidance, Ruth asked Boaz to be her family’s redeemer.
Boaz agreed and married Ruth. Together they had a son named Obed, who became the grandfather of King David. Through Ruth’s faithfulness, she became part of the family line leading to Jesus, the Savior of the world.
Loyalty That Honors God
Ruth’s decision to stay with Naomi reflects deep love and faithfulness. She gave up her homeland and security to follow Naomi and serve the Lord. Her loyalty shows the beauty of sacrificial love.
God’s Providence in Everyday Life
Though Ruth’s story seemed marked by loss, God was working behind the scenes. Through her obedience and Boaz’s kindness, He brought about blessings far beyond what Ruth could have imagined.
Ruth and Jesus, Our Redeemer
Boaz acted as Ruth’s kinsman-redeemer, rescuing her from poverty and restoring her future. This foreshadows Jesus, our ultimate Redeemer, who gave His life to save us and bring us into God’s family.
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” — Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
Ruth’s story reminds us that faithfulness and love, even in small decisions, can lead to God’s greatest blessings. When life feels uncertain, trust that He is working for your good and weaving your story into His greater plan.
