David & Goliath (1 Samuel 17)
September 5, 2025Have you ever felt trapped in a situation you couldn’t escape? The story of Moses and the Exodus shows us that God sees our struggles, hears our cries, and has the power to deliver us. It’s a powerful reminder that no force is greater than the Lord who saves.
📖 Story Summary
In Exodus 1, the Israelites were living as slaves in Egypt, oppressed under Pharaoh’s harsh rule. God raised up Moses, who was miraculously spared as a baby and later called by God through the burning bush to lead His people out of slavery.
When Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, God sent ten plagues to display His power. The final plague brought the first Passover, when God’s people were protected by the blood of the lamb. At last, Pharaoh released them.
As they left Egypt, Pharaoh changed his mind and pursued them with his army. Trapped at the Red Sea, the Israelites feared for their lives, but God parted the waters through Moses. The people crossed safely on dry ground, and the sea closed back over the Egyptians. God’s deliverance was complete, showing His power to save His people.
God’s People in Slavery
The Israelites lived as slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years. Their suffering grew unbearable, and they cried out for help.
“The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.” — Exodus 2:23 (NIV)
When God heard their cries, He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and raised up a deliverer—Moses.
God Calls Moses
God appeared to Moses through a burning bush in the wilderness and called him to lead His people out of Egypt.
“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” — Exodus 3:10 (NIV)
Though Moses felt unqualified, God promised to be with him. This reminds us that God equips those He calls.
God’s Power Over Pharaoh
When Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, God displayed His power through ten plagues. From the Nile turning to blood to the death of Egypt’s firstborn, each plague revealed the weakness of Egypt’s gods and the supremacy of the Lord.
The final plague led to the first Passover, when God’s people were saved by the blood of the lamb. This event pointed forward to Jesus, the true Lamb of God.
“When I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.” — Exodus 12:13 (NIV)
Crossing the Red Sea
After Pharaoh finally released the Israelites, he changed his mind and pursued them. Trapped between the Egyptian army and the sea, the people panicked—but God made a way.
“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land.” — Exodus 14:21 (NIV)
God’s people walked through on dry ground, and the waters closed over Pharaoh’s army. Their deliverance was complete.
Jesus, Our Greater Deliverer
The Exodus foreshadows the salvation Jesus brings. Just as Israel found freedom from slavery through the blood of the lamb, we are freed from sin through the blood of Christ.
“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” — 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
Through Him, we are no longer slaves but children of God.
Closing Encouragement
The story of Moses and the Exodus reminds us that God sees, hears, and acts on behalf of His people. Whatever bondage or fear you face today, know that Christ has made a way for you to walk in freedom.
