Moses and The Burning Bush Bible Story
April 7, 2025The story of Moses in the basket is a powerful example of God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, and the courage of a mother’s love. Found in Exodus 2, this moment marks the beginning of Moses’ extraordinary life, which would later lead him to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. But before Moses became the great leader of Israel, his life began in a humble and dangerous place, with a mother’s act of faith in the face of oppression.
🌟 The Background – The Oppression of the Israelites
At the time of Moses’ birth, the Israelites were living in Egypt as slaves under a harsh Pharaoh. The king of Egypt, fearing the growing number of Israelites, ordered that all male Hebrew babies be killed. This decree set the stage for a brave act of defiance by Moses’ mother, Jochebed.
“The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives… ‘When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.’” – Exodus 1:15-16
Jochebed, however, refused to obey the Pharaoh’s command and instead decided to protect her son.
🧺 Moses in the Basket – God’s Plan Unfolds
In Exodus 2, we read about how Jochebed, when Moses was three months old and no longer able to be hidden, made a basket out of papyrus reeds, coated it with tar and pitch to make it waterproof, and placed her baby son in the basket. She then carefully set it among the reeds along the banks of the Nile River, hoping that God would intervene and keep him safe.
“Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.” – Exodus 2:1-3
This act of faith and courage shows the deep love Jochebed had for her son and her belief that God would protect him. She knew that the king’s orders could not defeat God’s purpose for her child.
👑 Pharaoh’s Daughter Finds Moses
As the basket floated on the Nile, it was discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter, who was bathing at the riverbank. When she saw the baby, she had compassion on him, knowing that he was one of the Hebrew children. Despite knowing the Pharaoh’s command, she decided to adopt Moses as her own son, raising him in the royal court.
“Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe. And her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him.” – Exodus 2:5-6
God’s providence was clearly at work in this moment. Not only had Moses been saved from death, but he was now in a position to be raised in the palace of Pharaoh, where he would receive an education and training that would be critical in his later role as the deliverer of Israel.
💫 Moses’ Sister, Miriam, Plays a Key Role
Moses’ sister, Miriam, had been watching from a distance. When Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses, Miriam stepped forward and offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. Pharaoh’s daughter agreed, and Miriam went to get her mother, Jochebed, to care for the baby.
God orchestrated this reunion, and Jochebed was able to nurse and care for Moses. He also receiving compensation for doing so.
“Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?’ ‘Yes, go,’ she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.” – Exodus 2:7-8
In this way, God not only protected Moses but also allowed Jochebed to be part of his upbringing.
