Sun Stands Still Bible Story
April 10, 2025The life of Moses—prophet, leader, and servant of God—comes to a powerful close in Deuteronomy 33–34. After leading the Israelites for forty years through the wilderness, Moses gives his final blessing to the tribes of Israel and then climbs Mount Nebo, where God shows him the Promised Land before his peaceful death.
🌿 Moses Blesses the Tribes of Israel
Before his death, Moses gathers the twelve tribes of Israel and speaks a prophetic blessing over each of them. These blessings reflect both the past experiences and future destinies of the tribes.
“This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the Israelites before his death.”
—Deuteronomy 33:1 (ESV)
Each tribe receives a unique word:
- Reuben is blessed with life and strength (Deuteronomy 33:6).
- Judah is promised help and protection (v. 7).
- Levi, the priestly tribe, is praised for their faithfulness and entrusted with teaching God’s laws (vv. 8–11).
- Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) receives the richest blessings of the land (vv. 13–17).
- Other tribes, like Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Naphtali, and Asher, are also blessed with strength, abundance, and God’s favor.
Moses closes with praise to the God of Israel:
“There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help…”
—Deuteronomy 33:26
🏔️ Moses Views the Promised Land
In Deuteronomy 34, God tells Moses to ascend Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There, God shows Moses the entirety of the Promised Land—from Gilead to Dan, Naphtali, Ephraim, Manasseh, and all the way to the Western Sea.
“This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob… I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”
—Deuteronomy 34:4 (NIV)
Because of Moses’ disobedience at Meribah (Numbers 20:12), he was not allowed to enter the land. Yet, God graciously allowed him to see it from a distance.
⚰️ The Death of Moses
Moses died on Mount Nebo at the age of 120 years.
“And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said.”
—Deuteronomy 34:5
God Himself buried Moses, and to this day, no one knows the location of his grave (v. 6).
Even at 120, Moses’ vision was clear, and his strength was undiminished (v. 7). The people of Israel mourned him in the plains of Moab for thirty days (v. 8).
🔄 Leadership Passes to Joshua
After Moses’ death, Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. The people listened to Joshua, continuing the journey into the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 34:9).
📖 Lessons from Moses’ Final Moments
- God’s promises are sure – Even if we don’t see their full fulfillment in this life, God is faithful to His Word.
- Our legacy matters – Moses left a spiritual inheritance through his leadership, teachings, and blessings.
- Obedience and humility count – Despite his human failures, Moses is still called “the servant of the Lord.”
- God finishes what He starts – Though Moses’ journey ended on Mount Nebo, the story of God’s people continued.
