Moses & the Exodus (Exodus 1–15)
September 5, 2025Have you ever faced a season where everything seemed unfair or out of control? Joseph’s story reminds us that even in betrayal, hardship, and waiting, God is still at work. What others mean for harm, God can turn for good.
📖 Story Summary
In Genesis 37, Joseph, the favored son of Jacob, received a special coat and had dreams that one day his family would bow before him. His brothers, filled with jealousy, sold him into slavery in Egypt.
In Egypt, Joseph first served in Potiphar’s household, but after being falsely accused, he was thrown into prison. Even there, God gave him favor, and he interpreted dreams for Pharaoh’s officials. Later, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams of coming famine, and Pharaoh placed him in charge of all Egypt.
When famine spread, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. They did not recognize him at first, but Joseph eventually revealed himself, forgave them, and explained that God had used their betrayal for a greater purpose—the saving of many lives. Joseph’s story closes with him providing for his family and affirming God’s faithfulness.
Joseph’s Dreams and Betrayal
Joseph was Jacob’s favored son, and his brothers grew jealous of him. Joseph’s dreams suggested that one day they would bow before him, which only fueled their anger.
“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. — Genesis 37:19 (NIV)
Out of envy, his brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt. Even in betrayal and injustice, God’s hand remained on Joseph’s life.
God’s Favor in Egypt
Though Joseph served as a slave in Potiphar’s house, God gave him success in all he did. Wrongly accused and imprisoned, Joseph still trusted the Lord.
“But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.” — Genesis 39:20–21 (NIV)
Joseph’s faith in difficult circumstances shows us that God’s presence is greater than our trials.
From Prison to Power
Through God’s wisdom, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s troubling dreams of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Pharaoh recognized Joseph’s God-given insight and placed him in charge of all Egypt.
“So Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.’” — Genesis 41:41 (NIV)
God’s timing lifted Joseph from the lowest place to the highest, reminding us that He can turn suffering into blessing.
Forgiveness and God’s Plan
When famine struck, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. Instead of taking revenge, Joseph forgave them, recognizing God’s greater purpose.
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” — Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
Joseph’s story reveals how God can use even betrayal and pain to bring about redemption and healing.
Jesus, Our Greater Joseph
Joseph’s life foreshadows Jesus. Both were rejected by their own, suffered unjustly, and later brought salvation—Joseph for nations in famine, Jesus for the whole world.
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” — Luke 19:10 (NIV)
Just as Joseph’s suffering led to life for many, Jesus’ sacrifice brings eternal life to all who believe.
Closing Encouragement
Joseph’s journey from betrayal to blessing reminds us that no circumstance is beyond God’s control. What others mean for harm, God can use for good. Trust Him with your story, knowing He works all things together for the good of those who love Him.
