The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8:1–11)
September 6, 2025Have you ever struggled to forgive someone who deeply hurt you? The story of Joseph forgiving his brothers reminds us that forgiveness is possible when we trust God’s plan. What others intend for harm, He can use for good.
📖 Story Summary
Years after being sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph had risen to power in Egypt. A severe famine brought his brothers to Egypt to buy grain, not knowing they were dealing with the brother they betrayed.
After testing their hearts, Joseph could no longer hold back his emotions. In Genesis 45, he revealed his identity, weeping as he embraced his brothers. Instead of taking revenge, he spoke words of grace:
“And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.” — Genesis 45:5 (NIV)
Joseph reassured them, explaining that God had used their actions to bring about salvation for many people during the famine. He then provided for his family and invited them to live in Egypt under his protection.
Forgiveness That Heals
Joseph’s decision to forgive shows the power of letting go of bitterness. True forgiveness not only frees others—it frees us from the weight of resentment.
God’s Purpose in Pain
Joseph recognized that his suffering was part of God’s larger plan. His words remind us that even painful experiences can be used by God to bring about good.
Jesus, Our Greater Joseph
Joseph’s forgiveness foreshadows Jesus, who offers grace to those who wronged Him. Just as Joseph saved his brothers from famine, Jesus saves us from sin through His mercy and love.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
The story of Joseph forgiving his brothers reminds us that forgiveness is possible when we look at life through God’s perspective. Whatever hurt you carry, remember that God can turn it into something good—and He calls us to extend the same forgiveness we have received in Christ.
