Joseph Forgives His Brothers (Genesis 45)
September 6, 2025Have you ever stepped out in faith only to feel fear pull you down? The story of Peter walking on water reminds us that our eyes must stay on Jesus, who gives us courage to do the impossible and lifts us when we stumble.
📖 Story Summary
After feeding the 5,000, Jesus sent His disciples ahead by boat while He went up a mountain to pray. During the night, strong winds battered the boat, and the disciples struggled against the waves.
In the middle of the storm, Jesus came to them, walking on the water. Terrified, they thought He was a ghost, but He said: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27, NIV).
Peter replied, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus told him to come, and Peter stepped out of the boat. For a moment, he walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he became afraid and began to sink. He cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught him.
When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down, and the disciples worshiped Jesus, saying: “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Faith That Steps Out
Peter’s courage to step out of the boat shows what faith looks like in action. Trust in Jesus calls us to take risks and obey even when circumstances seem impossible.
The Danger of Distraction
Peter began to sink when he focused on the storm instead of Jesus. This reminds us that fear grows when we fix our eyes on problems, but faith grows when we fix our eyes on Christ.
Jesus, Our Rescuer
When Peter cried out, Jesus immediately reached out His hand. In the same way, Jesus saves us when we call on Him—not because our faith is perfect, but because His love is.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
The story of Peter walking on water teaches us that faith doesn’t mean never stumbling—it means trusting Jesus to hold us up. Keep your eyes on Him, and you will find the courage to rise above fear and walk where He calls you.
