Feeding the 5000 (John 6:1–14)
September 6, 2025Have you ever felt like life’s problems were about to sink you? The story of Jesus calming the storm reminds us that no matter how fierce the waves or how strong the wind, we are safe when Jesus is with us.
📖 Story Summary
In Mark 4:35–41, Jesus and His disciples set out across the Sea of Galilee after a long day of teaching. As they sailed, a furious storm swept over the water. Waves crashed against the boat, and it began to fill with water.
Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern. Terrified, the disciples woke Him, crying out: “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
Jesus got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves: “Quiet! Be still!” Immediately, the storm calmed, and the sea became completely still.
Then He asked His disciples: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Filled with awe, they said to each other: “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Brings Peace in Chaos
The disciples faced real danger, yet Jesus’ presence turned panic into peace. This shows us that when life feels overwhelming, He has the power to bring calm—not only to our circumstances, but also to our hearts.
Fear vs. Faith
Jesus questioned His disciples’ fear, teaching them that faith is not about ignoring storms but trusting Him through them. True faith looks beyond what we see and believes in His power.
Jesus, Lord Over All Creation
By calming the storm with His word, Jesus revealed His divine authority. The sea, often a symbol of chaos, submitted to Him instantly. This miracle reminds us that Jesus is not only Savior but also Creator, with power over all things.
“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” — John 1:3 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
Life’s storms will come, but the story of Jesus calming the sea assures us that He is greater than any fear we face. When the waves rise, remember that the One who commands the wind and the waves is with you—and He will not let you sink.
