Daniel in the Lions Den (Daniel 6)
September 6, 2025Life often brings battles that feel too big for us. The story of David and Goliath reminds us that God’s strength is greater than any giant we face.
Story Summary
In 1 Samuel 17, the Israelites faced the Philistines in battle. Their champion, Goliath, was a giant who mocked God’s people for forty days. No one dared to fight him. David, a young shepherd, came to deliver food to his brothers and heard Goliath’s insults. With faith in God, David volunteered to fight. Armed only with a sling and five stones, he struck Goliath on the forehead, and the giant fell. Israel won the battle, and David’s courage showed that God’s power is greater than human strength.
Israel’s Divided Heart
During King Ahab’s reign, Israel turned from God and worshiped Baal. Elijah, God’s prophet, confronted their wavering hearts.
“Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’” — 1 Kings 18:21 (NIV)
This challenge calls us today to choose wholehearted devotion to God instead of serving Him half-heartedly.
The Contest on Mount Carmel
Elijah set up a contest with the prophets of Baal. Each side would prepare a sacrifice, but neither would light the fire. Instead, they would call on their god, and the true God would answer with fire.
Baal’s prophets prayed and shouted all day, but nothing happened. Their god remained silent.
God Answers with Fire
When it was Elijah’s turn, he prayed a simple, faith-filled prayer.
“Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” — 1 Kings 18:37 (NIV)
Immediately, fire from heaven consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water poured around the altar. The people fell to the ground and cried, “The Lord—He is God!”
Jesus, the True Revelation of God
Just as God revealed His power on Mount Carmel, He fully revealed Himself in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, we see that He alone is Lord and Savior.
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” — Colossians 2:9 (NIV)
No false god or idol can stand against Him.
Closing Encouragement
Elijah’s story shows us that God’s power is real and His presence undeniable. When life tempts us to follow other “gods” of comfort, success, or approval, remember that only the Lord answers and saves. Choose Him with all your heart, and He will not fail you.
