Moses Final Blessing and Death Bible Stories
April 10, 2025The story of Balaam and the talking donkey is one of the most surprising and thought-provoking events in the Bible. Found in Numbers 22, it reminds us that God can use even the most unexpected means to accomplish His will and protect His people.
📍 Background: Israel and Moab
As Israel journeyed through the wilderness toward the Promised Land, they camped in the plains of Moab, near Jericho. Balak, king of Moab, became fearful because of Israel’s growing strength:
“Now this horde will lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.”
—Numbers 22:4 (NIV)
In desperation, Balak sent messengers to a prophet named Balaam, asking him to come and curse the Israelites.
🤔 Balaam Seeks God
Although Balaam was not an Israelite, he had some knowledge of the true God. When Balak’s messengers came with promises of money and honor, Balaam sought the Lord:
“But God said to Balaam, ‘Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.’”
—Numbers 22:12
At first, Balaam refused to go. But when more distinguished officials came with greater promises, Balaam asked God again. This time, God allowed Balaam to go—but only under strict conditions:
“Go with them, but do only what I tell you.”
—Numbers 22:20
🐴 The Angel and the Donkey
As Balaam set out, God’s anger burned against him because his heart was greedy for reward (2 Peter 2:15). So, the angel of the Lord stood in his path to oppose him.
Here’s where the story takes an unexpected turn.
Balaam’s donkey saw the angel, but Balaam did not. Three times the donkey turned aside to avoid the angel, and three times Balaam beat the donkey in frustration.
Then, the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth:
“What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”
—Numbers 22:28
A full conversation followed! The donkey defended herself, and God then opened Balaam’s eyes to see the angel standing in the path, sword drawn.
“I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.”
—Numbers 22:32
🙏 Balaam’s Heart Revealed
Though Balaam continued on his journey, God used the event to humble him and remind him that He alone controls the outcome.
When Balaam eventually arrived, he could only speak what God told him, and instead of cursing Israel, he blessed them multiple times (Numbers 23–24), much to Balak’s frustration.
📖 Lessons from Balaam and the Talking Donkey
- God Uses the Unexpected
If God can speak through a donkey, He can use any person or situation for His purpose. - Spiritual Blindness Is Real
Balaam, a prophet, couldn’t see what his donkey saw—sometimes our hearts blind us to God’s truth. - Obedience Must Come from the Heart
Balaam obeyed outwardly but was motivated by greed. God sees through false motives. - We Cannot Curse What God Has Blessed
Balaam learned the hard way: God’s will cannot be overturned by man.

The story of Balaam and the talking donkey shows that God is sovereign over all things—even our words, our plans, and our journeys. When we walk in obedience and humility, we can hear His voice more clearly. But if we persist in our own way, He may stop us—even with a talking donkey.
