How Do You Know If You Have the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit Is God’s Presence With Us
When we place our faith in Jesus, we don’t walk the Christian life alone. God gives us the Holy Spirit, who comes to live inside every believer. The Spirit is not just an influence or feeling—He is God’s personal presence with us.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.”
— John 14:16
This means that no matter where you are or what you face, you are never truly alone.
The Spirit Guides and Teaches Us
One of the Spirit’s most important roles is to guide us into truth and help us understand Scripture.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
— John 14:26

The Spirit Convicts and Transforms
The Holy Spirit also convicts us when we’ve stepped off God’s path—not to shame us, but to bring us back into relationship with Him. Over time, the Spirit transforms our character, producing the “fruit of the Spirit”:
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Patience
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Faithfulness
- Gentleness
- Self-control (Galatians 5:22–23)
These are not things we can produce on our own—they grow in us as we walk with God.
The Spirit Gives Us Strength and Comfort
Life brings seasons of weakness, grief, and suffering. In those moments, the Spirit brings strength and comfort beyond what we can find in ourselves.
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness.”
— Romans 8:26
He intercedes for us in prayer when we don’t even have the words to say.
The Spirit Equips Us to Serve
Every believer is given spiritual gifts through the Holy Spirit—unique abilities to build up the church and serve others. Some gifts are practical (like wisdom or teaching), others are supernatural (like healing or prophecy), but all of them are meant to glorify God.
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:4
Why This Matters
Without the Spirit, the Christian life would be impossible. He is our Helper, Guide, Comforter, and Strength. He reminds us that we are God’s children and empowers us to live in a way that honors Him.
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
— Romans 8:16
