What is the Church, Really?
September 2, 2025Understanding Sanctification
Sanctification is a word that can feel a little intimidating at first, but it simply means “to be set apart for God” and to grow in holiness. When we give our lives to Jesus, we are saved instantly by His grace. But sanctification is the process that comes after—it’s how God continues to shape us into the people He designed us to be.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress. Sanctification is God’s Spirit working in us day by day, helping us leave behind sin, grow in character, and reflect more of Christ in our lives.
“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3
The Three Parts of Sanctification
- Positional Sanctification
The moment you accept Christ, you are “set apart” as His child. God sees you as holy because of what Jesus did on the cross—not because of anything you’ve earned. - Progressive Sanctification
This is the ongoing process of becoming more like Jesus. Each day, through prayer, Scripture, and the Spirit’s guidance, we grow. We learn to let go of old habits, forgive, love, and walk in faith. - Final Sanctification (Glorification)
One day, when we are with the Lord, sanctification will be complete. There will be no more sin, no more struggle—only perfect holiness in His presence.
Why Sanctification Matters
- It deepens your relationship with God. As you grow in holiness, you draw closer to Him.
- It changes how you live. The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness—start showing up more in your daily life (Galatians 5:22–23).
- It’s part of God’s plan. Salvation is not just about eternity—it’s about transformation now. Sanctification is how God helps us live with purpose and hope here on earth.
How to Walk in Sanctification
- Stay in God’s Word. Scripture teaches us what pleases God and strengthens us against sin.
- Pray daily. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your steps, soften your heart, and help you grow.
- Stay connected. Be part of a Christian community that encourages and challenges you in your walk.
- Practice obedience. Each choice you make to follow God, even in small things, shapes your character.
Final Encouragement
Sanctification is not about trying harder—it’s about letting God work in you. It’s a lifelong journey, but you don’t walk it alone. The same God who saved you is the One who promises to finish the good work He started in you.
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6
❤️ Takeaway: Sanctification means you are set apart, loved, and being transformed daily by God’s Spirit.
