How Do You Know If You Have the Holy Spirit?

What Is the Bible?
September 2, 2025The Spirit’s Work in Us
When we place our faith in Jesus, God gives us His Holy Spirit—not only to comfort and guide us but also to equip us. The Spirit both empowers us with gifts to serve others and produces fruit in our character that reflects Christ. Understanding the difference between gifts and fruit helps us see the full picture of how God works in a believer’s life.
The Gifts of the Spirit
The Bible teaches that every Christian receives spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit. These are not talents we’re born with, but abilities given by God to build up the church and serve His purposes.
Paul describes these gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8–11:
- Word of wisdom
- Word of knowledge
- Faith
- Gifts of healing
- Working of miracles
- Prophecy
- Discernment of spirits
- Speaking in tongues
- Interpretation of tongues
Other passages add teaching, serving, encouragement, giving, leadership, and mercy (Romans 12:6–8).
Not every believer has the same gift, and that’s intentional. The Spirit distributes them as He wills, so that together, the body of Christ can function as one.
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:4
The Fruit of the Spirit
Unlike gifts, which vary, the fruit of the Spirit is meant for every believer. It’s the evidence of the Spirit’s presence in our lives.
Paul lists them in Galatians 5:22–23:
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Patience
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Faithfulness
- Gentleness
- Self-control
These qualities grow as we walk closely with God. They’re not instant, but over time, the Spirit transforms our hearts so we reflect more of Christ’s character.
Gifts vs. Fruit: What’s the Difference?
- Gifts are abilities God gives us to serve others.
- Fruit is the character God grows in us to make us more like Jesus.
Both are essential. Gifts without fruit can lead to pride. Fruit without using our gifts can leave others unblessed. Together, they show the fullness of the Spirit’s work.
Why This Matters
You may wonder: How do I know my gifts? Often, you’ll discover them as you serve. Pay attention to what comes naturally, what blesses others, and what feels Spirit-led. As for the fruit—don’t be discouraged if growth feels slow. Fruit ripens over time, and God is patient with us.
❤️ Takeaway:
The Holy Spirit equips you with gifts to bless others and grows fruit in your life to make you more like Christ. Both are signs that God is at work in you.
