Bible Verses With Curse Words

Verses with Curse Words

The Bible doesn’t contain curse words in the modern sense, but it does include verses with strong, intense language used to express anger, judgment, or condemnation. Here are some examples of Bible verses with strong language:

Galatians 1:8-9 (NIV)But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Context: The apostle Paul uses strong language here to emphasize the seriousness of preaching a false gospel. The term “curse” here refers to being eternally condemned.

Philippians 3:8 (NIV)What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.

Context: The word translated as “garbage” in this verse is the Greek word “skubalon,” which is a very strong term that can also be translated as “dung” or “excrement.” Paul uses this strong language to emphasize the worthlessness of worldly gains compared to knowing Christ.

Matthew 23:33 (NIV)You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

Context: Jesus uses harsh language to rebuke the Pharisees and teachers of the law. He is condemning their hypocrisy and warning them of the consequences of their actions.

1 Samuel 20:30 (NIV)Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you?”

Context: King Saul curses his own son Jonathan in a moment of anger. He is using harsh and insulting language as he accuses him of betraying the family.

Jeremiah 20:14-18 (NIV)Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me not be blessed! Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, who made him very glad, saying, “A child is born to you—a son!” May that man be like the towns the Lord overthrew without pity. May he hear wailing in the morning, a battle cry at noon. For he did not kill me in the womb, with my mother as my grave, her womb enlarged forever. Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?

Context: The prophet Jeremiah expresses deep despair and regret. He is cursing the day of his birth and the man who announced it. This passage is one of the most intense expressions of anguish in the Bible.

Psalm 137:9 (NIV)Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

Context: This verse is part of a psalm expressing the deep sorrow and anger of the Israelite’s. This was during their Babylonian captivity. The language is harsh and reflects the intense emotions of the time. Though it’s important to understand it in its historical and literary context.

These verses show that the Bible doesn’t shy away from expressing strong emotions. The Bible uses intense language when dealing with serious issues such as sin, judgment, and suffering.
