What Does God Want Me to Do?
November 11, 2024Can I Hear God?
Many people ask, “Can I hear God?” The Bible shows us that God does desire to communicate with His people, offering guidance, comfort, and encouragement. Through Scripture, prayer, and the quiet moments of life, we can learn to recognize His voice and draw nearer to Him. Let’s look at the different ways the Bible says God speaks, and how we can know when we’re truly hearing Him.
God Speaks in Different Ways
Hebrews 1:1-2 reminds us, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son.” Today, God speaks most clearly through His Son Jesus Christ, revealed in the Bible, and by the Holy Spirit. Sometimes He also works through people, circumstances, or even the beauty of creation (Psalm 19:1). However He speaks, His message always reflects His truth, love, and character.
Hearing God Through Scripture
The Bible is the primary way God speaks. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 we read, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” God’s Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). When we spend time reading and reflecting on Scripture, we open ourselves to God’s wisdom, correction, and encouragement. His written Word is the standard by which we measure every other voice.
God Speaks by the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide believers: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said” (John 14:26). The Spirit does not speak in contradiction to Scripture but confirms it—bringing God’s Word to life in our hearts, convicting us of sin, and giving us peace when we walk in His will.
Listening in Prayer
Prayer is not only speaking to God but also listening. Psalm 46:10 encourages us: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes God may impress a verse on our hearts, bring clarity to our thoughts, or give us a sense of peace through prayer. While we should be careful not to confuse our own desires with God’s voice, prayer is a space where we learn to trust His guidance.
God May Use People and Circumstances
God often works through the wisdom and encouragement of others. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Wise counsel, timely encouragement, or even open and closed doors in life may be ways God directs us. When tested against Scripture and prayer, these can be affirmations of God’s leading.
Does God Speak Audibly Today?
Throughout the Bible, God sometimes spoke audibly to people — for example, to Moses from the burning bush (Exodus 3:4), to Samuel as a boy (1 Samuel 3:10), and to Paul on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:4). These were very real, physical encounters with God’s voice.
Today, God can still speak audibly if He chooses, because nothing is impossible for Him. However, the Bible does not promise that every believer will hear His audible voice. More often, God speaks through His Word, the Holy Spirit, prayer, and the circumstances of life. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29), reminding us that faith is not dependent on hearing God audibly.
If someone does believe they’ve heard God’s voice, it is essential to test it against Scripture, because God never contradicts His Word. His guidance will always align with the Bible and reflect His character of truth, love, and holiness.
Recognizing God’s Voice
Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” His voice always aligns with Scripture and reflects His character—truthful, loving, and peace-giving. If a thought or impression contradicts God’s Word, we can know it is not from Him. True guidance from God will never lead us into sin but will draw us closer to Him in faith and obedience.
God’s Voice Brings Peace
Philippians 4:7 reminds us that God’s presence brings peace: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” When God speaks, His message brings clarity and peace—even when it challenges us to grow. This peace is a mark of His presence and reassurance of His love.
Embracing God’s Voice with Faith
Hearing God is possible because He desires a relationship with His people. By seeking Him in Scripture, prayer, and daily life, we can learn to recognize His voice with confidence. God still speaks today—always in harmony with His Word, always pointing us to Jesus, and always bringing peace and hope to those who listen with an open heart.
