What Does The Bible Say About Tithing
June 22, 2024Bible Verses for Anxiety
June 25, 2024The Bible speaks often about the words we use and the impact they carry. Scripture reminds us that the tongue holds “the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21). This means what we say can build others up or tear them down. Cursing can be understood in two ways: using profanity or foul language, and speaking curses over others by wishing them harm. God calls us to reflect His love in all areas of our lives—including our speech.
Cursing or Swearing
God designed words to encourage, teach, and bless. When we use profanity or crude speech, we distort that purpose. Instead of reflecting Christ’s love, foul language can harm relationships and set a poor example. Scripture urges believers to speak in ways that are helpful, uplifting, and filled with grace.
- “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” — Ephesians 4:29
- “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.” — Ephesians 5:4
Our words should show kindness and reflect the love of Jesus, setting us apart in how we communicate.
Cursing Others
Jesus summarized the Law into two great commands: to love God and to love others (Matthew 22:37–39). When we curse someone, we are wishing harm on them—something completely opposed to love. Instead of tearing others down, God calls us to forgive and extend grace.
- “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” — Exodus 20:7
- “Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” — Leviticus 19:12
- “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.” — Exodus 21:17
While these verses show the seriousness of cursing in God’s eyes, Jesus calls His followers to a better way—the way of love and forgiveness.
Forgiveness does not mean excusing wrongdoing, but it frees us from bitterness and allows God’s peace to heal our hearts.
- “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” — Matthew 6:14–15
Choosing Words That Bring Life
Cursing—whether through profanity or wishing harm on others—does not align with God’s design for our speech. As followers of Christ, we are invited to choose words that heal, encourage, and reflect the love of God. When we speak life instead of death, we become part of God’s work of restoring peace in a hurting world.
A Word of Encouragement
If you’ve struggled with cursing, swearing, or speaking words you regret—you’re not alone. All of us fall short, but God is ready to help us grow. The Bible reminds us that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). That means when we invite God to transform our hearts, our words will begin to change too.
Bring your struggles honestly before the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to fill your heart with His love, patience, and wisdom so that your speech reflects Him more and more. Remember, God’s grace is greater than our failures, and His Spirit can help us use our words to bring healing instead of harm.
- “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” — Psalm 141:3
When you stumble, don’t be discouraged. Keep leaning on God’s Word, practicing self-control, and surrounding yourself with encouragement. Over time, your words can become a testimony of God’s power to change lives.
