How to Hear God Speak Through His Word
September 10, 2025Have you ever read a verse and thought, “That doesn’t make sense” or “Why would they do that?” Often, the answer lies in context. The Bible was written in a different time, culture, and language. Understanding the historical and cultural background helps us see what the original readers understood—and brings the meaning of Scripture into sharper focus for us today.
Why Context Matters
The Bible is God’s Word for all time, but it was written to real people in real situations. When we know their world, we can better understand how God’s truth speaks into ours.
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” — Romans 15:4 (NIV)
Examples of Historical and Cultural Context
- Foot Washing (John 13:1–17)
In the ancient world, foot washing was the lowest servant’s job. When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, it wasn’t just kind—it was shocking humility. - The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37)
Jews and Samaritans had a history of deep hostility. For Jesus to make a Samaritan the hero of the story broke cultural expectations and revealed radical love. - Paul’s Letters
Many of Paul’s instructions make sense when we know the struggles of the early church—persecution, division, or cultural practices in cities like Corinth and Ephesus.
How to Explore Context in Bible Study
- Read Intros in Study Bibles: They explain who wrote the book, when, and why.
- Use Trusted Commentaries: They provide cultural and historical insights.
- Ask Good Questions: Who was the original audience? What was happening in their world? How would they have understood this?
- Compare Scripture with Scripture: Often, the Bible itself provides context across books and passages.
Practical Tip
When you understand the background, confusing passages often become clearer—and God’s Word feels even more alive. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t know all the details. Each new layer of context you learn adds richness to your understanding.
Closing Encouragement
Context really is king. The more we understand the world of the Bible, the more clearly we see God’s timeless truth. And the best part? That truth still speaks into your life today—guiding, comforting, and transforming you.
