Elijah & the Prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18)
September 5, 2025Have you ever faced a problem that felt far bigger than you? The story of David and Goliath reminds us that no challenge is greater than God’s power. With faith, even the smallest and weakest can overcome what seems impossible.
📖 Story Summary
In 1 Samuel 17, Israel’s army faced the Philistines, but no one dared to fight their champion, Goliath—a giant who taunted them for forty days. David, a young shepherd, came to bring food to his brothers and heard Goliath’s insults. Filled with faith in God, David volunteered to fight.
Rejecting armor and weapons, David went out with only a sling and five stones. He declared his trust in the Lord and struck Goliath with a single stone, killing him. Israel won a great victory that day, and David’s courage showed that true strength comes from God, not human ability.
Israel Faced a Giant
The Philistines challenged Israel with their champion, Goliath—a giant over nine feet tall. For forty days he mocked God’s people, and the Israelite army trembled with fear.
“Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, ‘Why do you come out and line up for battle? … Choose a man and have him come down to me.’” — 1 Samuel 17:8 (NIV)
Fear can paralyze us, but God calls us to trust Him even when the odds seem impossible.
David’s Faith in God
David was a young shepherd, not a soldier. When he heard Goliath’s defiance, his heart burned with faith that God would fight for His people.
“David said to Saul, ‘The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.’” — 1 Samuel 17:37 (NIV)
David’s confidence was not in his strength but in God’s power.
Victory in God’s Strength
Armed only with a sling and five stones, David stepped forward to face the giant.
“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.’” — 1 Samuel 17:45 (NIV)
With one stone, David struck Goliath on the forehead, and the giant fell. God gave victory to Israel through the faith of one young man.
Jesus, Our Greater Champion
David’s battle with Goliath points us to Jesus. Like David, Jesus stood in our place, facing the enemy none of us could defeat—sin and death. By His victory on the cross, He won freedom for all who believe.
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV)
Closing Encouragement
The story of David and Goliath reminds us that no giant is bigger than our God. Whatever challenges you face today, trust that the Lord is with you and fights for you. Victory comes not by human strength but by faith in Him.
