What Does the Holy Spirit Do in a Believer’s Life?

What Are the Gifts and Fruit of the Spirit?
September 2, 2025The Holy Spirit Is God’s Gift to Every Believer
When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, the Bible promises that you receive the Holy Spirit. The Spirit isn’t reserved for “special” Christians—He is God’s gift to all who believe.
“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.”
— Ephesians 1:13
This means if you’ve confessed Jesus as Lord and truly believe in Him, you already have the Holy Spirit.
The Inner Witness: A Sense of Belonging to God
One of the clearest signs is the inner assurance that you belong to God.
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
— Romans 8:16
The Holy Spirit gives believers an unshakable peace and confidence that they are loved and accepted by God.
The Fruit of the Spirit
Another way you know the Holy Spirit is working in your life is by the changes you see over time. The Spirit produces godly character—called the “fruit of the Spirit.”
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Patience
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Faithfulness
- Gentleness
- Self-control (Galatians 5:22–23)
These may not show perfectly or instantly, but as you walk with God, you’ll notice growth in these areas.
Conviction of Sin and Desire to Grow
The Spirit also convicts us when we sin—not to condemn us, but to draw us back to God. If you’ve felt that gentle nudge in your heart when you know something isn’t right, that’s the Spirit guiding you. Alongside conviction comes a new desire to grow closer to God, read His Word, and live differently than before.
Power to Pray and Understand Scripture
The Holy Spirit helps us pray, even when we don’t know what to say. He also opens our minds to understand Scripture in ways that bring it to life.
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
— Romans 8:26
This inner help and guidance is a clear sign of His presence.
Spiritual Gifts
The Spirit also equips believers with spiritual gifts—unique abilities meant to build up the church and serve others (1 Corinthians 12:7–11). Not every Christian has the same gifts, but every believer has at least one, given by the Spirit for God’s purposes.
Why This Matters
Knowing you have the Holy Spirit isn’t about chasing a feeling—it’s about trusting God’s promises and seeing His work in your life. If you’ve put your faith in Jesus, you can be confident the Spirit lives in you.
❤️ Takeaway:
If you’ve believed in Christ, you already have the Spirit. Look for His fruit, listen for His guidance, and trust that He is shaping you daily.
