How do I deal with doubt?
September 1, 2025The Bible: Both Simple and Profound
The Bible is unique because it speaks to both children and scholars. Some verses are so clear that even a child can understand God’s love (John 3:16). Other parts, like prophecies or symbolic passages, take careful study. This isn’t a flaw in God’s Word—it’s one of its strengths. The Bible is meant to meet us where we are, while also drawing us deeper as we grow in faith.
Why Some Parts Are Hard to Understand
- Different Cultures and Times
The Bible was written thousands of years ago, across different cultures and languages. Phrases, customs, and imagery that were obvious to people then may feel foreign to us now. - Spiritual Depth
God’s Word isn’t just information—it’s spiritual truth. Some passages require prayer and guidance from the Holy Spirit to fully grasp. Jesus Himself said, “The Helper, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things” (John 14:26). - Prophecy and Symbolism
Books like Daniel or Revelation use images and symbols to describe spiritual realities. These can feel mysterious, but they remind us that God’s wisdom is greater than ours. - Human Limitations
We are finite, and God is infinite. There will always be things beyond our full understanding (Isaiah 55:8–9). That doesn’t mean we can’t learn, but it does mean we need humility when approaching Scripture.
How to Approach Difficult Passages
- Pray First – Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding.
- Compare Scripture with Scripture – Often one verse explains another.
- Use Reliable Commentaries – Trusted Bible teachers and resources can shed light on context.
- Be Patient – Some verses make more sense over time as you grow in your faith.
Why God Allows Difficulty
Sometimes God uses hard-to-understand passages to slow us down, to make us seek Him more deeply. Struggling with Scripture can become an opportunity for prayer, growth, and dependence on Him.
✅ Key Takeaway: The Bible is both simple enough for anyone to understand the basics of salvation, and deep enough to challenge us for a lifetime. When passages seem difficult, don’t give up. Lean into God’s Spirit, study faithfully, and trust that He will reveal what you need to know in His timing.
