Why Should I Pray If God Already Knows Everything?

How do I know the Bible is true?
September 1, 2025If you’ve ever shopped for a Bible, you may have noticed there are dozens of translations available—NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, NLT, CSB, NASB, and many more. This can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re new to reading Scripture. Why are there so many versions, and does it matter which one you choose? Let’s break it down.
1. Different Source Manuscripts
The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Over time, new ancient manuscripts have been discovered, helping scholars make translations even more accurate. Some translations rely on slightly different source texts, which accounts for variations.
2. Word-for-Word vs. Thought-for-Thought
Bible translations usually fall into one of two categories:
- Word-for-Word (Formal Equivalence): These aim to stay as close as possible to the original wording. Examples: ESV, NASB, KJV.
- Thought-for-Thought (Dynamic Equivalence): These prioritize making the meaning clear in modern language. Examples: NLT, GNT.
- Paraphrase: Not strict translations, but restatements in very simple or creative language. Example: The Message.
Each approach has value, depending on whether you want accuracy for study or readability for devotion.
3. Language Updates
The English language has changed dramatically over the centuries. The King James Version (1611) was groundbreaking in its day, but modern readers may struggle with its archaic language. Newer translations update words and phrases so today’s readers can understand Scripture more easily.
4. Denominational Preferences
Different Christian traditions sometimes prefer translations that emphasize certain theological perspectives. For example, Catholic editions include the Deuterocanonical books, while Protestant Bibles typically do not.
5. Accessibility for All Readers
Some translations are created for children, new believers, or those learning English. Others are designed for deep study. The variety ensures there is a Bible accessible for everyone, no matter their background or reading level.
How to Choose a Translation
✅ Tip for Readers:
- If you’re new to the Bible → try NLT or NIV.
- If you want accuracy for study → use ESV or NASB.
- If you value tradition and history → go with KJV or NKJV.
- If you want something fresh and devotional → pair your main Bible with The Message.
The most important thing is not which translation you pick—but that you read it and let God’s Word transform your heart.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…” – Hebrews 4:12
