Why Do I Still Struggle Even Though I’m a Christian?
August 19, 2025
How do I know I’m really saved?
August 19, 2025Every Christian will, at some point, walk through a season where God feels silent. Prayers may seem to go unanswered, Scripture may feel dry, and God’s presence harder to sense. These moments can be confusing and even painful. But the Bible shows us that God’s silence does not mean His absence. Let’s explore why God sometimes feels silent, and what His Word teaches us about those seasons.
God’s Silence Doesn’t Mean His Absence
Deuteronomy 31:8 assures us: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Even if we can’t hear Him, God is still near. Just like the sun continues to shine even behind the clouds, His presence is constant—even when hidden from our feelings.
Silence Can Be a Season of Testing and Growth
Sometimes God’s silence is a way of stretching our faith. Job experienced this deeply. For a time, his cries seemed unanswered, yet God was at work shaping him for a greater testimony. James 1:3 reminds us: “Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
In silence, God strengthens our trust, teaching us to rely not on feelings but on His promises.
God May Be Calling Us to Seek Him More Deeply
Jeremiah 29:13 says: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
When God feels silent, it may be an invitation to press in—through prayer, fasting, worship, and time in His Word. Sometimes distractions, sin, or busyness can dull our ability to hear Him, and God’s “silence” is His way of calling us closer.
Silence Can Prepare Us for a Greater Revelation
Think of the 400 years between the Old and New Testaments. For centuries, Israel did not hear fresh prophetic words from God. Yet, that silence was not abandonment—it was preparation for the arrival of Jesus, the greatest revelation of all.
When God seems quiet, He may be preparing your heart for something greater than you expect.
God Speaks in Different Ways
Sometimes we expect God to speak audibly or dramatically, but He often speaks in stillness. In 1 Kings 19:11-12, Elijah looked for God in the wind, earthquake, and fire—but God’s voice came in a gentle whisper.
If God feels silent, it may be that He is speaking in ways we need to quiet our hearts to hear—through Scripture, through wise counsel, or through the nudging of the Holy Spirit.
Final Encouragement
If you feel like God is silent, don’t lose heart. Silence is not rejection. He is still present, still loving, and still working all things for your good (Romans 8:28). Keep seeking Him, keep praying, and keep trusting His promises. The silence may be the very ground where your faith grows deeper roots.
